In this week’s Parasha (vayechi) we learn that Ya’akov’s blessings to his children reflect his recognition of their unique qualities and roles in the future of Israel. Each son receives a personalized blessing based on his character, emphasizing that everyone has a distinct purpose within the community.
There is a beautiful tradition to bless our children every Friday night before the Shabbat meal. The blessing for the boys starts out with the words- "May G-D make you like Ephraim and Manasheh." (Ya’akov’s grandchildren)
One might ask why are these the figures that we pray that our children emulate? For example Why not our forefathers like the equivalent to the girls blessing to emulate the mothers?
One of the explanations is that Ephraim and Manasheh chose to remain faithful to their ancestors despite the wealth and luxury of Egypt. Their decision to align with the people of Israel serves as a model for our children, encouraging them to adhere to tradition despite external temptations. Additionally, Ephraim and Manasheh’s harmonious relationship, without jealousy, exemplifies the ideal of sibling unity, which we pray for in our own families.
Similarly, at World Bnei Akiva, we treat each student as an individual, recognizing their unique strengths. Like Ya’akov, who tailored his blessings to each son’s qualities, we guide students to understand their personal potential and role. By fostering individual growth and valuing diversity, we help each student find their place, just as Ya’akov’s sons did in their unique way.
Additionally we bless our chanichem to always stay connected to their judaism while remaining connected and loving to all parts of Am Israel, emulating Ephraim and Manasheh.
Wishing you all a Shabbat Shalom,
Rav Ari Haber
